Alex Browning is a high school student who is about to go for a field trip to Paris, France with his classmates. He accidentally falls asleep on plane before it takes off. In his dream, he has bad feelings about boarding the plane and feel uneasy about noticing different signs of misfortune (air crash) in the plane. Then the plane explodes in the air after taking off, with no survivors.

Alex wakes up in fear and notices that all the death warnings and patterns from his visions earlier have repeated coincidentally in real life. Knowing what is going to happen next, he begins to panic and wants to get off the plane.

Alex demands to get off the plane and causes commotion about foreseeing the tragedy of the plane but no one believes in him. He is then being dragged out of the plane together with some other passengers (his friends and teachers) by security guards.

In the midst of quarreling and fighting with his classmate, Alex and others witness the explosion of plane in the air from the airport lobby shortly after it takes off. There are no survivors from the explosion, his words come true.

The police/FBI forces suspect Alex for the plane explosion but they have no evidence. Alex's teacher and friends are dying one by one in different ways. He then discovers the pattern of death according to the seating plan on board after watching news. He knows exactly who is going to be the next victim of death's plan.

Alex tries many ways to 'cheat' death by analyzing suspicious warnings and breaking death patterns in order to save himself and his friends. Death skips some of them unexpectedly and moves on to the next person according to the assumed 'death list'. Alex and 2 other friends, Carter and Clear manage to survive after going through different accidents and distorting the death's plan.

6 months later, 3 of them are going to Paris again because they believe that they have successfully escaped from death's plan. Alex is quick to notice that the signs of death has come back. He attempts to leave the place thinking that death did not skip him this time. Clear saves Alex from accident but Carter dies instead, the death's plan continues.

Final Destination is categorized as horror film but I don't find it scary or horror enough as compared to watching supernatural horror or body horror films.

The plots of this film are both predictable and unpredictable at the same time. The film is spoiling all the possible death reasons of the characters most of the time. From spilling alcohol everywhere to putting cloth on knife rack, audience could guess how the characters are going to die as they watch the film. But audience would probably fail to guess the order/sequence of the process of death for particular accident because the patterns seem to happen reversely, begin from the very last hint to the beginning hint of the accidents. (When you think things would happen according to your expectation, things did not happen exactly as how you think it would be.)

The portrayal of spiritual/demon activities in this film is pretty subtle as we don't see them (as in ghosts, etc.) very directly in the frame. A few of the paranormal scenes are probably just the bathroom accident where the fluid flows reversely to where it comes from without leaving any traces after causing death, and about 1~2 shots where a grayish shadow(?) is shown very quickly before the tragedies. Besides the bathroom accident, the other characters seem to die in pretty 'reasonable' sense or logical way and hence they don't seem as demonic as the bathroom accident.

To me, the bathroom accident is definitely the most unforgettable and hardest part to watch because I can strongly feel how struggling the character was while trying to escape from being suffocated to death in the slippery bathtub, as if I'm choking to death instead of him. The film is very detailed about the process of suffocating to death especially when the eyes are turning red with bloodshot.

Although I expected to see more tragic and massive death scenes in the film, but overall it was still okay for a film produced in 2000 with the technologies back then.
